Having spent some time surrounded by St. Petersburg's beautiful views, I decided to get acquainted with the city's dirty and dark side. The search led me through a kilometer-long underwater tunnel to Kanonersky Island located next to the port.
Проведя в Петербурге с прекрасными видами некоторое время, я решил познакомиться и с его грязной и темной стороной. Поиски привели меня через километровый тоннель под водой в портовую часть города – Канонерский остров.
Since the foundation of the northern capital, the artillery battery was located on this island, and it was called Batareyniy Island (from Russian "Батарейный" - battery). Later there was a training ground for gunners. Hence the current name Kanonersky Island (from the French "canonnier" - gunner). At the end of the XIX century, it became part of the trading seaport of that famous "Window on Europe" established by Peter the Great.
После закладки Северной столицы на острове находилась артиллерийская батарея, и назывался он соответствующе – Батарейный. Позже здесь был полигон для пушкарей. Отсюда и пошло сегодняшнее название (от французского «canonnier» – пушкарь). В конце XIX века он стал частью морского торгового порта, того самого прорубленного Петром «Окна в Европу».
The construction of residential areas for the port and ship repair plant workers of the island began at the beginning of the 20th century. This way a small town of workers of the industrial world was founded. Later, a kindergarten, a school, shops, workshops, and even a sports complex with a swimming pool appeared on the island. To improve the living conditions, in 1983, an underwater tunnel was built. It seems that here it is - the utopic place to live for the working class...
В начале ХХ века здесь началось строительство жилых районов для работников порта и судоремонтного завода. Так зародился маленький городок работников индустриального мира. Позже на острове появляются детский сад, школа, магазины, мастерские, и даже спорткомплекс с бассейном. Чтобы улучшить условия для проживания, закладывается подводный тоннель, который сдали в 1983 году. Казалось бы, вот оно – утопичное место для жизни рабочего класса...
But in 2005 the construction of the Western High-Speed Diameter (ZSD) began right above the island. Many residents of the houses located under the bridge, moved out because of the constant noise and dust.
Но в 2005 году началась стройка Западного Скоростного Диаметра (ЗСД), прямо над островом. Многие жители домов, расположенных под мостом, не выдержав непрекращающийся шум и пыль на протяжении практически 10 лет съехали.
Today, the island is a place under a huge bridge, where workers and their families live and work, next to the homeless, who settled in the abandoned apartments.
На сегодняшний день остров – это место под огромным мостом, где живут и трудятся работники и их семьи, по соседству с бездомными, что заселили заброшенные квартиры.
